Skincare + Your Body’s Endocannabinoid System

Max + Jane formulator, Susan Nichols, has decades of experience as a holistic practitioner and Master Herbalist. Her knowledge of botanicals is unrivaled and she is constantly researching new ingredients and ways to use them. So, when trusted studies were published about the benefits of CBD, she dove head first into learning everything there is to know about this powerhouse ingredient.
To understand why CBD is such an important innovation in skincare, we’re going to start with the basics. The skin is made up of three layers - the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. The epidermis is the top layer, which acts as our barrier from the world. Skin cells in this layer protect us from the sun, abrasions, and environmental irritants. The next layer is the dermis, which contains nerves, blood vessels, sensory cells, sweat glands, oil glands, and hair follicles. The dermis is where collagen and elastin are produced, which help keep our skin looking plump and tight. The third and deepest layer of the skin is called the hypodermis, which attaches our skin to the rest of our body. This layer is made up of fat, connective tissue, and water. It helps to regulate temperature, cushions our bones and joints, and synthesizes essential hormones and vitamin D.
The cells that make up these three layers of our skin rely on a delicately balanced neuro-immune network, which is regulated by our body’s endocannabinoid system. Research has shown that CBD works with this system to help our cells communicate with each other across all of the layers of our skin. This communication helps to reduce inflammation, the signs of aging, and chronic skin conditions like eczema and acne.
This is a game changer for skincare and we aren’t the only ones who have noticed. So, we searched online and visited retail stores and shows in New Mexico, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York to treat our skin. Sadly, we discovered that many of the commercially available products don’t contain the amount of stated CBD, and some don’t contain it at all, listing only hemp oil (which is still a great ingredient but it doesn’t contain the active cannabinoids that make CBD so magical for your skin).
Pure CBD isolate has the potential to make a powerful impact on your skin and we want to make sure that you have access to the purest and most effective products containing it. So, we’ve been working on a new CBD line, prioritizing the same quality of ingredients that you’ve come to know and expect from Max + Jane. Our CBD isolate is sourced from an organic farm in Colorado and is processed at the top lab in New Mexico. It’s non-psychoactive and contains zero THC, so the only buzz you’ll get is from the feel good hormones triggered by self care. We use a third party testing lab to verify that there’s 200 mg of CBD in each of our 1oz bottles and we’re proud to say that we can trace any ingredient fully from seed to shelf.
